Why you should start Baking today
Published on 22nd January, 2024
In today's fast-paced world, stress and anxiety have become a common part of our daily lives. The key is to find a way to cope with the daily stresses of life that works for you.
As for me, it is baking. Not only do I find it therapeutic and calming, but it also comes with a myriad of benefits.
Here’s why you should start baking today.
Boost Your Self Confidence
Isn't it wonderful that once you get your whisk and apron, crack eggs, and mix flour, your cake is ready to bake?
The feeling after you have baked your cake or pastry is priceless. You feel thrilled and confident.
This confidence boost can make a world of difference when applied to your life. For instance, when you need to complete a college project or beat the deadline for that last minute assignment your boss handed you.
Teaches Attention To Detail
Concentration difficulties are a common symbol of many mental health issues. Baking makes you deviate from the norm.
Baking is science which requires you to be extremely keen especially when it comes to measuring ingredients and following a recipe to the letter.
Think of it this way, like a painter working on a masterpiece who is meticulously aware of how each brush stroke will appear on his work of art. But in this case, you are the painter and the kitchen is your safe space.
Paying attention to what you're doing is much simpler when there is a clear (and, in this case, tasty) reward for your efforts. Applying the mindfulness you practise in your baking to everyday situations may make a huge impact.
Improves Mood and Self Esteem
Mental health experts have found that being creative helps people feel better.
The act of baking can also boost our self-esteem and improve our mood. When we successfully create a delicious treat, it gives us a sense of accomplishment and pride especially for those struggling with low self-esteem.
"Baking has a set start and end point that helps people feel a sense of control and purpose, both of which help stave off feelings of overwhelm and depression." - Nicole Beurkens, Ph.D
Baking can also be a form of self-care, as it allows us to take a break from our busy lives and do something for ourselves.
Creative Outlet
Baking is a great way to express your creativity. From decorating delicious cakes and cupcakes to experimenting with new recipes and flavors, there are endless possibilities when it comes to baking.
This creative outlet can help us relax and unwind, as well as boost our problem-solving skills. It also allows us to share our creations with others, which can bring joy and a sense of belonging.
There are several ways to learn more about baking. You can read cookbooks, watch online videos on baking or take a class. I have discussed these tips in detail here. Start baking today and your mind and body will thank you. Happy baking!
